What the hashtag generator does

This tool gives you five hashtags for an Instagram post from a food or drink business. Instagram now allows five hashtags per post, so every slot should earn its place.

The five are split on purpose. Two are hyperlocal, tied to your city or its food scene. Two are niche tags for your kind of business, like specialty coffee or sourdough. One is a community tag that shows you are a local, independent spot.

How to use it

  1. Choose Image or Prompt. For an image, use a JPG, PNG, or WEBP under 10MB. For a prompt, describe the post in up to 500 characters.
  2. Type your city. A city name, a city and state code, or a nickname like ATX or PDX all work.
  3. Pick a category, or leave it on auto-detect and let the tool read your photo or description. The categories are cafe, restaurant, brewery, bakery, food truck, and pizza.
  4. Copy all five at once, or click one tag to copy it.
  5. Fifteen US food cities have their own tags built in: Austin, Nashville, Portland, Asheville, Charleston, Tampa, Columbus, Charlotte, Pittsburgh, Richmond, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Indianapolis, Boise, and Tucson. Any other city gets broader local food tags in the two local slots.

Tips for better results

  • Add your city every time. It is what turns the first two tags from generic into local.
  • Set the category yourself when the photo could be read two ways, like a pastry on a coffee shop counter.
  • Because the local tags come from a fixed list, the same city and category give the same set. Swap one niche tag for something specific to the post, like the dish name.
  • Skip any tag for a place you are not in or a product you do not sell.
  • Paste the tags under your caption or in the first comment, whichever you already do.

Why only five hashtags?
